BREAKING NEWS ? Evolve Composites buys Poolrite ...

Queensland-based lightweight-concrete manufacturer Evolve Composites Pty Ltd?has acquired?the exclusive rights to manufacture, market, sell and distribute the Magnapool range of mineral water swimming pool equipment and associated Poolrite products in Australia and some international markets, with the aim of having product ready for the coming summer.

Evolve is based in Brisbane and manufactures and distributes the Australian-made Polyslab and Evo-Crete range. The company has an extensive distribution network and well-established sales and marketing channels into the largest wholesale and retail plumbing, irrigation and home improvement stores across Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

This announcement follows the appointment of a voluntary administrator to Poolrite under the authority of Astrid Kunz, a trusted friend of CEO and owner Ross Palmer.

The licensing agreement includes Australia, New Zealand and some other markets but not Europe or the United States.

The agreement does not include any intellectual property but does include the tooling which will be moved to a new factory in Brisbane. While there have been some staff losses, a few Poolrite staff have been employed by Evolve and Poolrite has also retained some staff to handle R&D and export into Europe and the United States.

Evolve Managing Director Ty Hermans says that because they are starting from the ground up, they?ll draw on the existing staff as much as possible. He also says that his core focus is to get product out.

?Obviously a lot of customers have been keen to know when they?re going to get product and that?s going to be our main focus. Customers are being supremely supportive saying at last there?s a light at the end of the tunnel.?

The other item of keen interest is warranties, and Hermans says that even though it is not part of the licensing agreement, he will handle as much of the warranty backlog as possible.

?The outstanding warranty issues are quite small and we?re going to handle as much of it as we can,? he says. ?We need a little time to build our stock back up, and we haven?t got our head around exactly what there is yet. It?s not part of the licence but as a goodwill gesture we?re going to look at the warranty and attack it as much as we can, once we?ve worked out the backlog. We?ll know more in a couple of weeks.

?First and foremost we?ve got to get the manufacturing underway. We understand what?s going on in the marketplace and we know builders have half-finished pools and have been waiting for equipment and materials. Now they can get them finished off. And it?s good timing as we?re coming into summer.?

Evolve has a strong distribution channel and Hermans says that one thing they?ve always done well as a company is to maintain extremely stable distribution models.

?We?ve heard the pricing?s been a bit here and there,? he says. ?But we?ll make sure it?s stable and fair throughout the supply chain.?

Part of the existing Evolve channel includes distribution through mass plumbing and hardware chains such as Tradelink and Bunnings. But Hermans says he?s not going to dramatically change the existing Poolrite model.

?With MaganaPool and Poolrite our model is going to be the same as Poolrite currently has. We?re not going to change it. Current dealers and distributors will still have access to product.?

Hermans is committed to keeping the manufacturing in Australia, and more specifically Queensland.

?I?m just glad we?re able to keep things alive. People were very concerned about whether things were going to continue. One thing that we will definitely do is maintain manufacturing in Australia.?

Although the swimming pool industry is not part of Evolve?s current core businesses, the company has a reputation for pursuing innovation.

?There are a lot of synergies from a manufacturing and distributing point of view, using existing procedures we know back-to-front,? he says. ?We haven?t necessarily made pool equipment before, but we?re good at manufacturing, marketing and distribution nationally.?

Hermans has great confidence in the Magnapool and Poolrite products and says that many builders had been waiting for several months and during that time had been offered substitute products, but held out because they too believed in the products.

?We are proud to ensure the ongoing supply of Australian-made Magnapool and Poolrite products well into the future,? he ?says.

Hermans says that Evolve will immediately start production to ensure that all customers receive stock. ?Leading up to what looks like a nice and hot summer we want to make sure that existing Magnapool owners have all the supplies they need to ensure their pool is crystal clear for the holiday season.

?All of our plans are long-term for the ongoing success of the Magnapool range of products. Most importantly, the changes that are made now will ensure that the business is even bigger in years to come. We have plans for rapid growth both here in Australia but also internationally through our vast distribution network.?

SPLASH! will update this story in the near future.

Shop Talk with And George | Fetch Magazine by Taigan

Created and curated by mother daughter team Jan Roden and Christy Ford, And George is a shop based out of Charlottesville, Virginia. With extensive experience in the design world, the duo hand-select the furniture and decorative objects they feature. We talked to Jan about antiques, running a family business, and historic Charlottesville homes. Click through to see the interview.

Can you tell us how And George?came to be??

I have been a Designer?for over 30 years. Christy spent many years in New York as a photographer for shelter magazines where she got into the best houses in the country. Basically, our worlds collided!? When she and her husband decided they were more normal that they thought they were?as in ?lets move back to Virginia to start a family??I tried to bribe her into opening a store together. It?s something we had always talked about, but never thought of as more than a pipe dream.?They landed in Charlottesville, so we partnered up and opened And George. The next thing I knew, I was living in Charlottesville too, a block and a half away from Christy. I still don?t believe it!

Can you tell us a bit more about your partnership with your daughter? In what way do you balance each other out or how does the dynamic further your brand?

Eleven years have flown by!?Originally we used to joke about us each having our own room to put our purchases in as we shopped.?We were so wrong!? We totally mix it up. We laugh about things the other has bought that we think, ?no one will ever buy that,??but we have customers from all eras and?tastes.

And George carries such a wide selection?from antiques to accessories to purses?how do you curate such a beautiful collection??

We buy what we love?and?we both have varied and interesting taste that run deep. We both love nature, we mix moss from the floor of the woods into our displays, right in an antique silver compote. Now Christy?s six year old daughter, Ruby, has joined the mix. She has decided that she will ?make things to sell in the store?.? Sprinkled into the already wide selection of merchandise are Ruby?s creations, with her own price tags (6 cents is a favorite price of hers). Now that we can boast that three generations are gathering you never know what will be next.

How does one make use of traditional antiques?

The juxtaposition of antiques mixed with modern surroundings is wonderful. Antiques in Period Homes are fun. Our area offers many historic properties and I have enjoyed working on?several. It is a real challenge to inject a twenty first century family into an 18th century home and not lose the integrity of the home. In gathering for And George?we try to find antique and?vintage pieces that can be repurposed for today?s life style, like lamps made of architectural fragments.

Turkey tamps down talk of going to war with Syria

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Turkish artillery shelled targets in Syria for a second day in retaliation for a mortar attack that killed five Turkish civilians. But while Turkey is debating authorization of military action in parliament and called an emergency meeting of NATO to discuss the incident, officials say that the government has no plans to declare war.

The Associated Press reports that the Turkish military fired several artillery rounds into Syria early today, according to a witness. Mustafa Guclu, who lives in Akcakale, the Turkish town hit yesterday by Syrian mortars, said they fired five rounds of artillery "after midnight" and another round around 5 a.m. on today. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, several Syrian troops were killed by the Turkish attack, the BBC reports.

The slew of attacks come in response to yesterday's shelling of Akcakale by Syrian mortars, which killed two woman and three children in the worst case of cross-border violence into Turkey since the Syrian uprising began. AP adds that, according to Turkish media, at least 10 others were injured in the attack.

The Syrian mortar shell damaged the door and walls of a house in Akcakale, while shrapnel drilled holes and shattered windows of neighboring houses and shops. Some residents of Akcakale abandoned their homes close to the border and spent the night on the streets. Others gathered outside the local mayor's office, afraid to return to their homes as the dull thud of distant artillery fire rumbled across the town.

According to Russian media reports, Syrian officials told the Kremlin that the attack was a "tragic accident" and not an intentional assault on Turkey, reports Reuters. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia, a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, urged Damascus to publicly acknowledge the mistake.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office condemned the attack, saying that Turkey would "never leave unanswered such kinds of provocation by the Syrian regime against our national security." Mr. Erdogan also put forward a bill in parliament that would grant "a one-year-long permission to make the necessary arrangements for sending the Turkish Armed Forces to foreign countries," reports Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News.

Opposition parties condemned the bill as an authorization of war, and are expected to vote against it. But one of Erdogan's senior advisers, Ibrahim Kalin, commented on the military situation on Twitter, saying, "Turkey has no interest in a war with Syria. But Turkey is capable of protecting its borders and will retaliate when necessary."

RELATED ? Why no safe zone in Syria, yet? Five complications

Experts told Hurriyet that the bill did not necessarily mean war.

?Issuing a bill to authorize military operation does not mean declaring a war. It could make a deterrent effect. Issuing the bill as soon as possible would be beneficial for that. If the disturbance [Syria caused on the border] gets worse, Turkey could take action,? retired Gen. Arma?an Kulo?lu said.

And while last night Turkey called an emergency meeting of NATO, of which it is part, to review the incident, a military reaction by the alliance seems highly unlikely. The Guardian reports that while NATO ambassadors condemned the attack on Turkey and called for an immediate end to "aggressive acts" by Syria, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the alliance was cool to the idea of getting militarily involved. "Syria is a very, very complex society," he said. "Foreign military interventions could have broader impacts."

The Guardian also notes that yesterday's emergency meeting was called under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which calls for consultation "whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened." Importantly, it did not invoke the weightier Article 5, which declares that "an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all" that permits a military response by the entire alliance against the attacking forces. Invocation of Article 5 would likely prelude direct military action by NATO.

More than 2 million workers strike in Indonesia

(AP) ? Indonesian unions say more than 2 million factory workers have gone on a one-day strike across the country to call for higher wages and protest the hiring of contract workers.

National police spokesman Col. Agus Rianto says hundreds of thousands of laborers from more than 700 companies at 80 industrial estates took to the streets in protest Wednesday.

Yoris Raweyai, chairman of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers' Union, says workers want the government to revise a law allowing companies to hire temporary workers on one-year contracts without benefits.

Indonesia's Constitutional Court ruled in January that the hiring practice is unconstitutional and violates workers' rights.

About 23,000 workers planned to march in the capital, Jakarta, on Wednesday afternoon, and some 15,000 police were expected to be deployed to safeguard the rally.
