Some Barefoot Runners Tip Orthodoxy Back on Heels

Barefoot, five-finger, super-minimal, zero-drop. Whatever joggers embrace as the approach-du-jour for improving form, most of these trends stem from one physiological principal: people who grow up running sans footwear?the way our ancestors did for hundreds of thousands of years?run by landing on their fore- or mid-foot.

A new study finds, however, that not all habitually barefoot runners today actually run that way. The research was published online January 9 in PLoS ONE.

One of the ideas behind barefoot and minimal-shoe running has been that by cutting out our super-cushy sneakers, we will land more gently on the mid- or fore-foot, thereby avoiding a jarringly hard heel strike. This rear-foot landing, along with extra force allowed by the cushion of modern running shoes, many have argued, might be to blame for a host of running-related injuries that tend to plague these fitness chasers.

But the initial research into barefoot runners focused on a particular group of unshod runners?the Kalenjin, of Kenya?who tended to land on their forefeet. The new research investigates running styles in another Kenyan group that also runs shoeless. ?The Daasanach people grow up without shoes and continue to spend most of their lives barefoot,? Kevin Hatala, a graduate research in Hominid Paleobiology at George Washington University and co-author on the new paper, said in a prepared statement.

Nevertheless, these people, it seems, land farther back on the foot when they run.

?We were surprised to see that the majority of Daasanach people ran by landing on their heels first,? Hatala noted. ?This contradicts the hypothesis that a forefoot strike characterizes the ?typical? running gait of habitually barefoot people.?

The researchers recruited 38 Daasanach adult volunteers (half of whom were female) and had them run down a hard-packed sand track that had a pressure-sensor pad placed midway down the length. Each runner ran across the pad at least three times at a comfortable, self-chosen ?endurance? pace and at least three more times at a faster ?sprint? pace.

At the endurance pace (three meters per second), 72 percent of landings measured were rear-foot strikes and just 4 percent of landings were on the forefoot. Only once runners accelerated to more than six meters per second did a majority of runners switch to mid-foot strikes. Few (14 percent) landed on their forefoot?even at this quicker pace.

The striking?so to speak?difference between the two groups might be explained, at least in part, by a host of factors. As Hatala and his colleagues point out in their study, the Kalenjin runners from some of the original barefoot running research were athletes and all put in more than 20 kilometers or running per week?more than did the Daasanach in the new study. So a fore- or mid-foot strike might have been necessary to protect the body from the impact of so much running.

Additionally, much of the Kalenjin running was done on hard surfaces, against which they would want to guard for hard landings?perhaps by focusing on the softer-landing forefoot.

And finally, in the original studies, the Kalenjin forefoot strikers also ran at a much faster pace (about five to six meters per second) than did the Daasanach when they tended to land on the rear of their feet (three meters per second). More recent observation, however, has found that the Kalenjin tend to keep up their forefoot striking even at slower paces.

The findings don?t necessarily mean that a goal of mid- or forefoot striking for recreational (shod or unshod) runners is misplaced?or that those looking for a more minimal or ?natural? running form should opt for a rear-foot strike instead. The research simply shows that there appear to be more than one style of running for people who have grown up running without shoes.

?The challenge ahead is to identify the most important factors that influence how barefoot people run and the healthiest style for today?s runners,? Kevin Richmond, an anthropologist at George Washington and study co-author, said in a prepared statement.

The new findings might also help researchers who study the evolution of the human gait, in characterizing preferred running styles for activities regarded as important for our ancestors, such as persistence hunting or effective scavenging. ?It is not clear which experimental sample, if either, represents a better ?model? for the distances and frequencies of running in early humans,? the authors noted in their paper.

In the meantime, the discovery that it might be possible to run for years with a heel-strike?even shoeless?adds another bump in the road to any quest for finding a one-size-fits-all running style.

Western Digital shows off upcoming WD Black hybrid drives, we goes eyeson

As devices get thinner and thinner, there's no place in the world for chunky hard drives, and to that end Western Digital has been talking about bringing ultra-thin 5mm hybrid drive technology to the market. We just got a look at the new drives, which will be branded WD Black -- two 2.5-inch models consisting of a 500GB, 5mm thick (or thin) unit with 24GB of NAND memory, along with a 1TB, 7mm drive that also has 24GB of NAND. A spokesperson said that NAND could eventually go up to 32GB. There's no performance figures or pricing available yet, but WD has already started shipping copies of the new models to OEMs, and expects that they'll land in the laps of consumers within the next 6 months. For a brief video tour of the new products, head after the break.

2012 Babson Survey of Online Learning: 6.7 Million Students Taking ...

Academia can continue quivering in fear and refuse to adopt massive open online courses, but a new study from Babson suggests this growing popularity isn?t a mere fad. Over 6.7 million students are now taking at least one online course, despite the opposition from more traditional faculty members.

The 2012 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group highlights higher education?s dire need to evolve?and quick. Seventy-seven percent of academic leaders ranked the learning outcomes in online education ?as the same or superior to? those reached in physical classrooms, where face-to-face interaction is touted as some key game changer.

Yet, if students can receive similar or better outcomes by taking courses online for free, why step foot into a classroom at all?

MOOCs continue to receive criticism. The survey admits academic leaders ?remain unconvinced? that the platforms represent a ?sustainable method for offering online courses.? As the years progress, however, so will MOOCs? features, and the smarter move would be to give the ever-expansive mode of online learning its well-deserved due now. The sooner schools adapt, the easier it will be to keep up, if they aren?t already too far behind.

?Learning is no longer limited to four walls?learning can happen anywhere?and it already is happening everywhere, everyday,? said Todd Hitchcock, senior vice president of online solutions at Pearson Learning Solutions, in a release. ?The growth of online learning underscores this need for quality, flexible education programs that meet the demands of our 21st-century workforce.?

In just over a year, the number of students taking at least one online course grew by 570,000. Sad to say, only 2.6 percent of higher education institutions currently have a MOOC, according to the survey, and only 9.4 percent report MOOCs are part of their plans moving forward.

One notable shift is that the proportion of ?chief academic leaders who say online learning is critical to their long-term strategy is at a new high of 69.1 percent,? yet the percentage of faculty below them who actually accept the value and legitimacy of online education still lingers at a mere 30.2 percent.

The survey?completed in partnership with Pearson, the Sloan Consortium and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation?is based on responses from over 2,800 academic leaders. The entire survey is now available online, but for a look at some of the rest of the data broken down, check out charts from the survey in the slideshow below.

Dozens of road construction projects planned in 2013 - WWL-TV

NEW ORLEANS -- The city of New Orleans is ringing in the new year by tackling dozens of roadway and street enhancement projects.

The city's list of 2013 improvements will include $200 million in repairs to Hurricane Katrina-related damages.

Drivers all too familiar with the massive potholes and unpaved roads in the Lower Ninth Ward know when to slow down.

"It's been a mess. As you can see I drive a black car. It's hard to keep it clean with the roads being this way," said Lower Ninth Ward resident Thomika Cunningham.

Every day, Cunningham is forced to navigate around the craters outside her house. She says a trouble spot on Deslonde Street has gotten worse in the last year and a half.

But change, according to the city of New Orleans, is finally coming.

"You're going to see a lot of changes and a lot of construction activity in 2013 and beyond as part of the recovery roads program," said Mark Jernigan, director of Public Works for the city of New Orleans.

Starting this year, Cunningham's street is one of dozens that will benefit from $200 million in FEMA funding.

"That program is intended to repair Katrina-related damage city wide. So we've got work going on in 72 neighborhoods," said Jernigan.

The city of New Orleans says 2013 will also pave the way for 71 Roadway and Street enhancement projects totaling $61-million. They'll include road repaving, traffic signal and signage improvements, sidewalks, and dedicated bikeways.

Additionally, 14 streetscape projects are expected to be completed this year, totaling about $13-million.

Paving a street that's been untouched since Katrina is an improvement that one Lower Ninth Ward resident looks forward to seeing happen in the near future.

"It's a great sign of progress, and as you can see more homes are coming back. It's just waiting for our neighbors to come home, and us working together as a community," said Cunningham.

The city of New Orleans says 47 additional projects will also kick off this year connected to various parks, community centers, one library along with fire and police stations. Those improvements will total $186 million.

Mission Admission: When to Schedule Interviews - mbaMission

Mission Admission is a series of MBA admission tips; a new one is posted each Tuesday.

With MBA admissions offices releasing second-round interview invitations in a few weeks, we thought we should explore an issue that brings endless paranoia to MBA candidates: scheduling interviews. Many schools will give applicants a significant window in which to schedule their interview. So, does scheduling an interview early convey that you are being too aggressive and do not have any other irons in the fire, or instead that you are eager to act and impress the admissions committee? Does scheduling an interview later give the impression that you are less interested in the program, or instead that you are highly sought after and are interviewing at multiple schools?

The reality is that there is really no difference between scheduling your interview early on during the time window offered and scheduling it near the end of this time frame. The MBA admissions committees recognize that you, like all candidates, are busy and that your schedule is in flux as a result of work, community and personal commitments. The committees focus on the interviews themselves, not on when they are scheduled. So pick a date that works for you?a day and/or time when you know you can be comfortable and relaxed, not distracted?and start preparing!
