That?s the question the US Supreme Court is poised to take up in a case out of Shelby County, Alabama, in which local officials, backed by a bevy of Southern states, will argue that federal oversight of polling stations primarily in the former Confederacy is no longer necessary, and, is, in fact, itself discriminatory.

And while many Americans still believe the Voting Rights Act is important, those who want to put voting affairs back into the exclusive hands of state and local election officials have an unprecedented argument for abolishing it: The reelection of President Barack Obama.

True, Obama lost most of the so-called Section 5 districts and states, and it?s in the South that the Department of Justice cited the Voting Rights Act in challenging new voter ID laws that US Attorney General Eric Holder likened to Jim Crow era ?poll taxes.?

Yet the election postmortems from both sides of the political spectrum have focused on a simple reality: Minorities in the US have enough voting freedoms to determine the leader of the free world, as they helped to do on Tuesday when blacks and Hispanics, especially, were seen as key elements in Obama?s decisive reelection.

That?s thrown the GOP into an ideological civil war over whether to drop its heavily anti-immigrant tone and consider full amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants living and working in the US.

Shelby County wants the Supreme Court to declare Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional after the Justice Department nullified a local redistricting effort that attorneys argued played a role in the sole black incumbent being defeated.

The Supreme Court hinted earlier this year that it saw ?serious constitutional problems? with the Voting Rights Act after it sent a contested Texas electoral map to a lower court without ruling on it. Given that and other recent hints from the court, legal experts widely believe that the conservative-leaning court is ready to make a decisive ruling on the future of the Voting Rights Act.

Seattle Commercial Real Estate Market Third Quarter Update

Seattle has the seventh-best commercial real estate market in the country, according to a recent report from the Urban Land Institute, and recently released Third Quarter reports were positive.

Amazon?s growth continues to garner national headlines for Seattle?s office market. After already leasing a considerable amount of space in 2012 and announcing the development of a million new sf of office space in three buildings downtown, Amazon also said it will buy its 1.8 million sf South Lake Union campus from Vulcan Real Estate for $1.16 billion. While Amazon has been responsible for much growth in the office market, CoStar, a source of commercial real estate information, reports that the area?s overall office vacancy was flat during Third Quarter at 10.8%.

The apartment market remains another bright spot, but vacancy was fairly flat at just under 5% in Third Quarter, according to Dupre + Scott Apartment Advisors. Rents have been rising moderately in recent months, and Dupre + Scott reports that managers plan to raise rents during the winter. Construction has been ramping up in recent years, so we?ll start to see more apartment deliveries in 2013.

The industrial market was fairly flat during Third Quarter, CoStar reported, with vacancy at 6.2% and a little more than 100,000 sf absorbed. First and Second Quarters were both very strong quarters for the industrial market, so year-to-date absorption stands at more than 3 million sf.

The retail market showed improvement during Third Quarter, with vacancy falling three percentage points to 5.5%, according to CoStar, and nearly half a million sf of absorption. Rental rates were down slightly, but are still up from a year ago.

one, me just seeing on tv a map of the usa showing the "blue and the red" states. i noted that the whole of the Northeast was blue.

Suddenly it "hit me", the northeast has the most people who are educated and urban. they also have no extended family, if they have a family the people are scattered all over the countryside. few friends either.

so who is going to help someone if the car breaks down, the apartment is flooded, bail you out of jail, take you to the doctor's?

no one.

thus the Government is now becoming our extended family! Someone must be there for us when things go bad!

Two....there is a senior here, in my Independent home, who has become totally blind. he comes down every day for eldercare lunches and this man needs Total Care for his lunch. he has only two relatives who live 150 miles away and both of the relatives, i just learned today, have health care issues with other people who are far far worse off than this blind guy. So until the long paperwork process is completed for Nursing home placement is done, i will give my whole hour of eldercare lunch volunteer help, to this Blind man. I have to come earlier as he wants to come early and he cannot see any clock to check the time, thus no weekly meeting with a friend at a cafe.
