Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think

Hoping for a better world ? quickly? "Abundance" promises to take you there.

Ribs grown in a petri dish. Miniature solar panels that double as windows. Pristine water filtered from chemical waste.

These seemingly far-fetched technologies give you the impression that Peter Diamandis? and Steven Kotler?s new book, Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think, is plucked straight out of the sci-fi section.

But don?t be fooled.

Abundance is not fantasy. It is a tale, say authors Diamandis and Kotler, of ?good news;? a spritely and exciting collection of reasons why, despite the ever-constant refrain that Earth is on the verge of disaster, we must stay positive.

If anyone could qualify as harbingers of good news, it would be Kotler and Diamandis. Kotler, a journalist and author, has covered science and technology for dozens of publications, and met Diamandis while covering the X Prize Foundation. Diamandis? brainchild, the X Prize Foundation is a nonprofit that runs incentive-based competitions to bring about ?radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.? Past winners have invented suborbital, reusable spaceships and technologies to clean oil off the surface of the ocean.?

The authors argue that these sorts of technological achievements? ? evidence of exponentially growing technologies ? are just one small part of why the next quarter century will bring about a world of abundance. Coupled with the giving of technophilanthropists, a do-it-yourself culture, and what the authors term ?the rising billion,? this abundant world will be one where anything is possible, ?a world where everyone?s days are spent dreaming and doing, not scrapping and scraping.?

?Imagine a world of nine billion people with clean water, nutritious food, affordable housing, personalized education, top-tier medical care, and nonpolluting, ubiquitous energy. Building this better world is humanity?s grandest challenge,? they write at the book?s inception.

And then they issue a gentle challenge: ?What follows is the story of how we can rise to meet it.?

In just 250 pages, Kotler and Diamandis offer a blue print of what it will take to achieve abundance. They call it the Abundance Pyramid. First, ensure food, water and shelter for every person on the planet. Then, guarantee abundant energy, educational opportunities, and communications and information access. Finally, produce a world where freedom and health care is in the province of all.

Technologies like the Lab on a Chip device will be able to return lab results in a matter of minutes. The Slingshot can already turn anything wet into ?pure pharmaceutical-grade injectable water.? And the zero gravity, 3-D printer will give astronauts the ability to print out spare spaceship parts in the click of a button.

All of these technologies, and the dozens of others that "Abundance" introduces you to, will fill every rung of the Abundance Pyramid, and fast. Progress in technology is exponential ? moving more than fast enough to meet the challenges ahead.

The four billion poorest people of our world, the ?rising billion,? will be a huge force in the vision of abundance, note the authors. Not only have companies begun to take advantage of the aggregate purchasing power of those at the bottom of the economic pyramid by selling cheaper products to them (the fifth-largest denim producer in the world, Arvind Mills, now sells wildly popular, $6, ready-to-make jeans kits in India) but the introduction of cheap cell phones has revolutionized the way these bottom billion individuals live: mobile banking, job-hunting, and a free flow of information is now possible.

Cloud Based Accounting Software For Your Small Business ...

How To Choose An Accounting Software For Your Small Business

Every small business owner will surely want to see his/her business prosper. He/she will work hard in order to have his/her business in tip-top shape. Income and expenses will surely be tracked in order to find out if the business is still profitable. Gone are the days when business owners keep track of them in spreadsheet or even on pare. At this day and age, there are a lot of accounting applications for small businesses which can cater to various needs of an entrepreneur.

If a business owner is searching the marking for great accounting software, it is best to check out with the business?s accountant prior to looking for one. The accountant can recommend software or may even advise not to buy one if there is no need because the accountant will be able to help to business owner with the software setup. It?s also good to check out business forums to find out what other small enterprise owners are using. It also pays if the business owner will list down features that he/she is searching for in an accounting application like inventory, payroll, online banking, credit tracking, etc.

Not all accounting software is created equal therefore in the search for software he/she must ensure that such software is compatible with his/her business type. If the small business owner is into service business, he/she needs accounting software which can track billing and time. On the other hand, if he/she is into trading, he/she needs software which has the capability for inventory tracking and invoicing. The owner?s accounting skill level and his/her time in the maintenance and setup must also be considered. If the business owner needs only simple accounting software then he/she need not invest on the most expensive accounting applications.

It is also important to find out if the business needs a double entry or a single entry accounting application. If the business only deals with cash, a few assets and liabilities, and the owner just needs to record and keep track of income and expenses then an Excel spreadsheet or free accounting software may suffice. The business owner can also check out PCMAG and CNET which review different kinds of software. There are accounting applications which offer trial runs. The business owner can try out some of these applications before finally deciding which of these are most applicable to the kind of business the owner has. Customer support is also an important feature. It is important to check if the software one wants to buy has 24/7 technical support, online help, complete user?s manual, and/or forum where the business owner can interact with fellow users to ask questions regarding the use of the software.

Also, the business owner can also research on accounting cloud applications, which are accounting applications found in the internet. With its emerging popularity, more and more small and medium scale businesses are shifting to accounting applications online. Such applications are accessible anywhere, anytime, as long as there is robust internet connection. They can be accessed using a tablet, a smart phone, or a laptop. With this type of accounting software, the business owner need not buy software licenses. Adding users to access the business?s records is a breeze. There is also no need to buy expensive servers to host the software and users can access the same accounting file at the same time. Backups are also not a problem with accounting software hosted in the cloud because the vendor is responsible in scheduled backups.

Common disadvantages of cloud computing, however, include security, downtime, and privacy. Although big company suppliers often implement stricter security policies, customers are also wary about housing their clients? and their information in the cloud. The vendor?s supplier may suffer downtime for days. When this happens, every business which is using the accounting software may have no access until the vendor resolves the problem. Also, the problem of privacy may come up from time to time because users are still nervous about other people having accessed to their data. A lot of cloud computing vendors, however, offer strict authentication procedures like usernames and passwords.

In almost everything, there are advantages and disadvantages. To decide which is better for a small business enterprise, the business owner must be able to weigh all the pros and cons. It is good practice to search for various applications and services available on-site and in the cloud and compare each feature before finally deciding which of the numerous accounting software is the most applicable for the owner?s business.

Motor Bike Stator | Inside Look Into Fundamental Motorcycle Parts ...

Article by Amdmin2011

If you want to find out how to properly sustain and take care of your vehicle, it is wise to begin by learning more about the several Suzuki Motorcycle Parts first. If you?re not previously aware about CDI ignition and motorcycle stator, then you may find the numerous parts a bit too overwhelming to comprehend. Ensure that you read even further below to find details on the purpose for each and how they might improve your motorcycle?s performance.CDI Ignition:The Capacitor Discharge Ignition is recognized as the best option of automotive electronic ignition system used for several types of automotive engines. It was developed so as to cope with the lengthy charging periods that are very common with high inductance coils. It was first released into the industry around 1980?s and has continued to be very popular today. When utilized on vehicles and motorcycles, the basic principle in the use of a CDI ignition relies on electric induction from the coil to generate electricity that is capable of bursting the spark plug. A conventional CDI module is made up of triggering circuit, charging circuit, main capacitor, along with a small transformer. There are different quantities of energy that every CDI system is capable of storing but many of them are roughly at 50mJ at the very least.Motorcycle Charging System:Motorcycles need to use a battery so as to store electric energy that will be utilized for a number of reasons as well as help the motor to keep running. You need to charge the batteries prior to using it in order that it can perform as it is designed for Honda Motorcycle Parts. The ideal charging requirement for a motorcycle battery is 14.4 Vdc to make sure you have sufficient voltage that could power your vehicle at various speeds.Right now, there are 2 standard ways of charging of motorcycle batteries. The first system is referred to as Permanent Magnet Generator System which uses a winded coper on the motorcycle stator that is responsible for generating power. Meanwhile, the second system is called Field Controlled Generator System. Another system is largely identical to the first one with the sole difference being that it does not use magnet but utilizes an electromagnet instead to produce a magnetic field. This is similar to a car?s charging system.Motorcycle Stator:The stator is a stationary area of the motorcycle?s alternator, which can be complex for newbies to understand so it is crucial to check out the basic electrical system utilized on a motorcycle. It is an important part of any vehicle in order to generate and store electricity that will be utilized afterwards for operating it. Your motorcycle need the alternator to generate AC that will enable the ignition systems, halogen bulbs, and tail lights to turn on. Given that the battery is not capable of storing the AC itself, you have to convert the energy first into DC so it can be stored. You will find several motorcycle stator designs to choose from however they usually have the same fundamental principle Ducati Motorcycle Parts. Moving a magnet past a coil allows the coil to produce a burst of electricity. You must choose a stator based on the length and amount of winding components, though that in itself will change depending on your motorcycle?s power requirements to deliver maximum power output. Now you may utilize this information on CDI ignition and aftermarket motorcycle parts, particularly if you?ll want to spend on a replacement for such motorcycle components. If you?re not sure regarding how to go about the buying process, you can seek guidance from an automotive shop worker so you can make the proper investment.

  • Two Thumbs Way Up
  • Amazingly aromatic with abundant floral, citrus and honey notes. It has rich flavors of apricot and ripe tangerine firmly supported by bright acidity. It also has a subtle herbal earthiness with notes of ginger and cinnamon.

Starting at about North Druid Hills Road and heading northeast for about 15 or so miles on Buford Highway, you can see restaurant signs in Spanish, Malay, Korean, Vietnamese and Bengali. This may be a bit intimidating for the casual diner, but it?s downright terrifying for wine lovers.

It?s not the language barrier or items such as tacos de lengua (cow tongue) that give diners and winers pause. It?s not really even the fact that these multifarious cuisines don?t boast a wine culture. Whether it?s Korean barbecue or chiles?rellenos or southeast Asian vindaloo, the one trait many of the foods along Buford Highway share is fiery, hot spices.

One of the easiest paradigms of wine pairing is to pick a wine from the region where the food comes from. That?s easy if the dish is beef Bourguignon (a red Burgundy will do nicely) or Alsatian-style coq au vin (a dry, luscious Alsatian riesling is just the ticket). But what if you?re at the table at Panahar (a Bangladeshi restaurant located at 3375 Buford Highway, Atlanta) and a smiling Mirza Ameen, the owner, arrives with the house specialty: lamb vindaloo? One doesn?t find too many wineries within 3,000 miles of Dhaka, Bangladesh?s capital.

Tropical countries ringing the Indian Ocean can?t grow grapes for wine, but they would if they could. That?s clear from the lime condiment that accompanies the spicy dishes at Panahar. Like a lime, wine is blessed with acidity. This is particularly true for white wines. Crisp, white wine provides much-needed relief from peppery fire and it also brings a little more to the table than a simple piece of citrus can.

But which crisp, white wine? There are a lot to choose from. For many years, my go-to wine to foil spicy dishes has been Austrian gr?ner veltliner with its brisk acidity and nuances of lime and lime zest. Dry Australian rieslings also do the trick for the similar reasons. I?ve long enjoyed Alsatian gew?rztraminers, which also douses flaming tongues with a touch of soothing, honey-like sweetness.

Recently at Panahar, I uncorked a chenin blanc from Vouvray, a village in France?s Loire Valley. (One nice thing about Panahar is they encourage guests to bring their own beverages as their beer and wine offerings are meager. Also, there?s no corkage fee.) I think I may be on to something with the Vouvray.

I like my vindaloo made non-American style, which means it?s hotter than Sofia Vergara in a red mini skirt. My wife, Eleanore, and I brought along the 2010 Domaine Pichot Vouvray. It had an herbal, almost cilantro-like quality and an earthiness that parallels the abundant cinnamon, cumin and cardamom spices of the vindaloo. Brimming with bright acidity, it was a great match.

So be not afraid of cuisines outside of your comfort zone, especially those that lean heavily on piquant spices. Mada hala masalayukta khabara sange mahana. (Bengali for: wine is great with spicy food.)

The Pope Is Getting His Own Twitter Account

While the Pope may not be the biggest fan of social media, he has nevertheless recognized its ability to reach out to his flock, and maybe even gain new adherents (or 'followers').

Pope Benedict XVI is set to become the first pontiff to register a personal Twitter account, in an attempt to change with the times and use new technology, rather than outdated missives to communicate,?the Guardian reports.

"The tweet can be reformulated, redistributed, relaunched and disseminated," Father Claudio Maria Celli, the head of the Vatican's pontifical council for social communications, said.?"In this sense it is like the gospel, a small mustard seed that once scattered grows into bushes where birds can rest."

While '@BenedictusPPXVI' is the rumored Twitter handle doing the rounds in the Italian press, the Vatican has refused to confirm it, and has not set a date for the first tweet.?Celli said tweets would probably include links to the pope's speeches (we're guessing there won't be any personal photos with other celebrities).

Tweets from Benedict's new personal account may not always be written by the pope himself, but will always be approved by him, a Vatican source told the Guardian.

This won't be the first papal dalliance with Twitter, though. During Lent, he will be tweeting once a day from the site Pope2you's twitter account. He also tweeted the launch of the Vatican news site from Vatican radio's Twitter account last year.

'The Descendants' is full of trust lessons for Houston film fans ...

With the Academy Awards coming up this weekend, it seems like an ideal time to talk about some of the estate planning themes present in "The Descendants," which is nominated in five categories.

The film has been praised for its multifaceted view of family relationships. George Clooney portrays a wealthy trial attorney, Matt King, who is forced to examine relationships with his immediate family, extended relatives, and ultimately look back to his ancestors who settled in Hawaii. A sub-plot of the film is King's struggle as the trustee of his family's dynasty trust, which is coming to an end soon.

The family trust owns a prime acreage of Kauai oceanfront, and Clooney must decide between selling the land or keeping the land in the family somehow. The legal issues, though based on Hawaii state law, surrounding the trust are quite accurate.

Although Houston's estate laws are different than those of Hawaii, the film dramatizes several very important estate planning issues that may be of importance to Houston residents.

? Trusts: Throughout the film, King struggles with decisions about the trust. One troubling issue with this trust is that it is a long-term trust, which makes it difficult to for the beneficiaries to discern the wishes of the person who drafted the trust. The legal issues of how long a trust can last and joint-ownership of land also are presented in this film. Joint ownership of land can be very difficult because when a trust awards land to multiple people, it is often very difficult for them to agree on how to proceed. The lead character also struggles with the issue that he and his cousins did not do anything to earn the wealth that they have inherited. Many of these issues can be examined during estate planning in order to mitigate several of these problems.

? End-of-life planning: Another lesson present in the "The Descendants" is the wisdom of having a living will. A living will provides instructions to health care providers about your preferences for end-of-life care. Preferences about resuscitation and other efforts to prolong your life can be detailed in a living will.

Lamborghini Admits that SUV Concept will Debut at Beijing Auto ...

Lamborghini has reaffirmed its plans to unveil an SUV concept at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show in April. The Italian company said that the reason why it opted for an SUV model is the car buyers? preferences in China.
?Chinese customers love their big cars?, Christian Mastro, Lamborghini?s general manager for the Asia-Pacific region, told Bloomberg News. ?All the brands are making cars more specific for the Chinese market.?

It?s a fact that has been noticed by other luxury carmakers, such as Bentley. VW Group?s other exclusive brand, will also unveil its first-ever SUV concept next month at the Geneva Motor Show. It plans to roll out the production version in 2015, one year ahead of Lamborghini?s successor to the 1980s LM 002.

Giuliano Noci, vice director for the China campus of Milan Polytechnic, says that, unlike many Europeans or Americans customers, Chinese car luxury car buyers find a Lamborghini or Bentley SUV entirely natural: ?Since wealthy Chinese consumers have a limited history with the European brands, the luxury carmakers can dare something new.?

This strategy has worked brilliantly for Porsche since 2002, when it launched the first-generation Cayenne. Despite being received with mixed feelings by the press, it went one to become the Stuttgart-based company?s bestseller: it now accounts for nearly 50 percent of total sales, and in China, it has a one-year waiting list.

IHS Automotive forecasts luxury SUV sales in China will increase by 49 percent by 2015 to 265,200 units. That?s almost three times the global rise in the rest of the world, which is expected to increase by 18 percent over the same period.

?SUVs are just a great interest for a lot of people because of the driving position ?above everyone else- and also because of the road conditions in some fast-growing economies?, says IHS analyst Ian Fletcher.

He adds that SUVs are more profitable for carmakers because they carry a higher price tag, while at the same time lowering development costs by borrowing parts from other models. The latter is exactly what Porsche did with the Cayenne and its cousin, the VW Touareg.

Sales and profits is the best motivator, even if initially their CEOs have different plans. That?s why Lamborghini, Bentley and Maserati are going ahead with the once unthinkable by rolling out SUVs.

These companies may not gather the interest of some traditional customers, such as three-time Bentley owner Ronald Venn from London, who says that he would never buy a Bentley SUV: ?I?d go to Range Rover. I go to Bentley for a luxury limousine. I just love the comfort, the power and the ostentatiousness of the engine.?

It?s doubtful whether Crew will sorely miss him, though. His void will be filled by the likes of Shanghai-based real-estate company owner Bill Liu, who recently bought a Range Rover Evoque and owns five sports cars, including a Lamborghini Aventador.

?I would definitely consider such a vehicle?, says Liu, ?but it has to be practical and not exorbitantly priced.? Considering that he paid a million bucks for his Aventador, due to high import taxes, Liu's view on pricing is debatable?

Unions gearing up to spend big in 2012 election

(AP) ? Unions say they are gearing up to spend more than $400 million to help re-elect President Barack Obama and lift Democrats this election year in a fight for labor's survival.

Under siege in state legislatures around the country ? and fearing the consequences of a Republican in the White House ? union leaders say they have little choice as they try to beat back GOP efforts to curb collective bargaining rights or limit their ability to collect dues.

"People are digging deeper," said Larry Scanlon, political director of the country's largest public workers union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "If Republicans take over the presidency, Congress and enough state legislatures, unions will be out of business, pure and simple."

Scanlon's union was the biggest overall spender in the 2010 midterm elections, doling out about $93 million to help state and federal candidates, mostly Democrats. This year, AFSCME is expected to spend at least $100 million or more on political action, including television advertising, phone banks and member canvassing. The effort is to help the president, Democrats running for the House and Senate, gubernatorial candidates and key state lawmakers.

With increased spending planned by other labor groups, including the powerful Service Employees International Union and the AFL-CIO, unions are likely to top the $400 million they spent to help elect Obama four years ago.

Not all union expenditures on political action are publicly disclosed, so some numbers are based on self-reporting. But unions have long been known as one of the most reliable supporters of Democratic candidates and their efforts have increased with every election as the threats to organized labor grow.

Unions already spent more than $40 million last year to successfully repeal an Ohio law that restricted collective bargaining rights and to recall lawmakers who backed a similar measure in Wisconsin. They are spending millions more in a bid to recall Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who led the charge to curb public employee union rights as a way to balance the state's budget.

But unions are being spread thin as they deal with a new wave of measures they say are designed to weaken their clout. Indiana passed a right-to-work measure earlier this month, and Republicans in New Hampshire are pushing a similar bill. Legislatures in Arizona and Utah are weighing measures to limit bargaining rights for their public employees.

"Part of the Republican strategy is to try to bleed us," said Mike Podhorzer, political director of the AFL-CIO. "There are certainly more union members now who understand the importance of political engagement and are willing to go door-to-door and make phone calls and do campaigns."

Tim Phillips, president of the conservative anti-tax and anti-regulation group Americans for Prosperity, denied any grand strategy to weaken unions. His group, founded with the support of billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, spends millions on anti-Obama and anti-union ads across the country.

"It's not accurate to say there's some master plan to drain resources," Phillips said. "These are genuine public policy efforts."

But Phillips said he thinks that, for the first time, unions have to confront organized grassroots opposition in a number of states.

"And Americans for Prosperity is absolutely a key component in that," Phillips said. "The unions have always had the advantage and we are now matching them."

The stakes are even higher for unions this year, as GOP presidential hopefuls seeking conservative support have made unions a regular punching bag. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney says he would support states pursuing right-to-work laws and seek to ban unions from using automatic dues deductions for politics. He would also reverse Obama's executive order encouraging the use of union labor in large government construction projects.

AFSCME, the 1.6-million member union, started early this year, spending $1 million on television ads during Florida's GOP presidential primary to weaken Romney, the candidate organized labor presumes will emerge as the Republican nominee.

The SEIU teamed up with Priorities USA Action, the major super PAC backing Obama, to buy ads in Florida and Nevada accusing Romney of flip-flopping on immigration policy. SEIU is the single largest contributor to Priorities USA after making a $500,000 contribution in December.

The 2.1 million-member union is expected to spend at least $85 million to help Obama win, similar to what it spent in 2008, spokeswoman Jennifer Farmer said.

So far, unions are finding a way to pay for all the political spending. Union members are contributing more to political action committees, agreeing to special assessments and spending more time working on political causes.

The AFL-CIO is following a new strategy outlined last summer to contribute less money to specific candidates and spend more on building its infrastructure. The goal is to lay a foundation for year-round mobilization that keeps going in the months following an election. Competing for the union money are the various races, from president to state lawmaker.

"We have to use 2012 not just to win for its own sake, but to use as a springboard for 2014 when the governors in all these states are up," Podhorzer said.

The new strategy emerged after some unions grew frustrated last year that Democrats in Congress were not doing enough to stand up for labor's agenda.

The AFL-CIO also started its own labor super PAC, which allows it to raise unlimited amounts of money and mobilize support beyond its traditional base. The new super PAC has already pulled in $3.7 million.

Busia's Perspective on African Society and Culture | Ghanamma.com

|

Following his deliberate political stampeding out of Ghana by the Nkrumah-led Convention People?s Party (CPP), in the run-up to the 1960 Presidential Election, aimed primarily at rubberstamping Nkrumah?s dictatorship under the guise of an Executive Presidency, the future Prime Minister K. A. Busia, then leader of the main opposition United Party (UP) in parliament, secured an appointment to an endowed chair at the African Studies Center at the world-famous University of Leiden, in the Netherlands. In his inaugural address as ?Professor of the Sociology and Culture of Africa,? twentieth-century Africa?s foremost social scientist reiterated Dag Hammerskjold?s perspicuous observation that Africa?s centrality to the crossroads world of the 1960s could not be ignored by the United Nations Organization of which Mr. Hammerskjold was the secretary-general: ?We are at a turn of the road where our attitude will be of decisive significance, I believe, not only for the future of this organization, but also for the future of Africa. And Africa may well in present circumstances mean the world? (See K. A. Busia, The Sociology and Culture of Africa: Its Nature and Scope, University Press of Leiden, 1960. Print. 3).

Contrary to cynical attempts by his most ardent detractors to demonize the late and former Ghanaian leader, as one who was neocolonialist and parochially divisive in the pursuit of his ideological agenda, Busia demonstrates an acute and pragmatic appreciation vis-?-vis the organic unity of the primeval continent, even while also significantly admitting of its unique ethnic, cultural and racial diversity. To the foregoing effect, the inaugural address presenter observes: ?There are some experts who deny the possibility of dealing with Africa as a whole in any context whatsoever, because of its size, and of the variety of tribes and peoples, governments and cultures found in Africa. ? It is indeed a large Continent, covering 11,700,000 square miles, 40% larger than the [erstwhile] Soviet Union, and more than three times the size of the United States, including Alaska. For its size, its estimated 280 million [people, in 1960] is sparse, in comparison with the population densities of other Continents; but Africa claims more distinct peoples and cultures than any other Continent. ? Since the end of the Paleolithic period, Africa has been inhabited by five races: Bushmanoid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid and Pygmoid. These races are classified on the basis of a combination of inheritable physical traits; they all belong to the one species, Homo Sapiens, which includes all the peoples of the world. There is no scientific basis for the belief that some races are inferior, and some superior. Man represents only one animal species? (3-4).

And unlike the so-called Afrocentrists and their programmatically allied Nkrumaist ideologues, Busia envisaged the universally discredited policy of Apartheid in South Africa as an axiological norm that was prevalent all over the world, in practice, particularly in Europe, rather than an anomaly, or one that was rigidly and dually bifurcated into black and white. To this end, the author observes: ?This needs emphasizing in relation to African Studies. The doctrine of racial inequality is by no means confined to the policy of apartheid in South Africa, but is implied in policies and practices in other countries too. It rests on the assumption that there is an inherent difference in the capacity of racial groups for the creation, learning or adaptation to culture. This would make Kipling?s: ?East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet? applicable to Culture? (4).

Rather, the Oxbridge-educated scholar debunks the myth of racial and ethnic supremacy by discursively expatiating on the subject as follows: ?Sociological studies have shown that there is no scientific support for this. In fact, the processes of acculturation in Africa show that moral, political and technical potentialities are not biologically determined. There are differences in culture between racial and even ethnic groups in Africa, but they can be accounted for by differences in experience, for biological capacity is moulded by the opportunities provided by the cultural and social environment. But there are political policies which aim at ensuring and perpetuating cultural differences by denying Africans opportunities for participating fully in the total cultural environment, and so learning and adapting themselves to it. Yet an important contribution of cultural anthropology and sociology to race relations is the general agreement on the finding that culture is learnt, and that given adequate opportunity, an individual or racial group can learn and master new cultural patterns. This gives ground for optimism. Even for the most acute racial tensions in Africa, it offers the hope that the Western cultural heritage can be mastered by Africans, and that the different racial groups living in multiracial societies, such as in the Rhodesias [present-day Zambia and Zimbabwe] or in the Union of South Africa, can all participate in their common cultural environment. Sociological studies of acculturation, of the processes of contact and intermixture of the traits and patterns of different cultures, thus assume importance in tackling the practical problems of race relations in Africa? (4-5).

In other words, Busia was definitely far ahead of his Nkrumaist detractors in perspicuously recognizing the imperative need for Africans to systematically and progressively cultivate what Americans have come to recognize as the ?melting pot? of socio-cultural and multiethnic and multiracial synergy as a means of healthily expediting the modernization and technological development of postcolonial Africa. Outside of southern Africa, where European settler presence was much more limited, Busia, implicitly, recognized synergistic cultural organicity in terms of globalization or ?global villagization,? in the prophetic observation of the immortalized Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan.

Furthermore, for Busia, the kind of geopolitically expedient nationalism advocated by President Nkrumah, for example, had no factual basis in historical reality; for Africa?s centrality as a primeval cauldron of global human civilization necessitated the synergistic propulsion of human development in the contemporary era. This organic and expansive trend in thinking may very much have informed the Ghanaian leader-scholar?s more pragmatic and conciliatory attitude towards the odious and erstwhile apartheid regimes in southern Africa: ?The cultures of Africa are not easy to classify in as distinct categories as the languages. Africa is probably the cradle of mankind. Every year, fresh archeological evidence shows it to have been the first home of man, from the very dawn of cultural history. It is claimed that Dr. Leakey?s Zinjanthropus, or East Africa Man, found in the Olduvai Gorge, was the world?s earliest man, and lived more than 600,000 years ago. The first achievement of a Neolithic agricultural civilization in Africa goes back 7,000 years. Different races have thus lived and interacted in Africa for thousands of years, and survivals of extremely old cultural inventions and ways of life appear alongside much more recent cultural developments? (5).

Even so, Busia is empirically realistic enough to also observe that such seminal technological and cultural achievements, as pioneered on the African continent, were by no means hermetic or devoid of valuable and even significant foreign contributions: ?Through Egypt, Ethiopia and North Africa came influences of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean; through Madagascar, the ancient cultures of Asia; and in modern times, the violent impact of European cultures has been felt everywhere in Africa? (5).

In the field of religion, the great social thinker and theorist is of the firm belief that the African is as articulate and philosophical in outlook as any other species of humanity: ?In his earlier studies of the Negroes of Dutch Guiana and the United States, Herskovitz pioneered a field of great interest for studies of the diffusion of African culture.? Subsequent studies of religion and social organization in Brazil, in Dutch and British Guiana, in Cuba, the West Indies, and Surinam have confirmed that African religions, music and dance can survive under the most severe conditions of uprooting and transplanting; and syncretisms of African religion and rites of the Christian Church in these regions as well as in Africa itself give evidence of the vitality of some aspects of African culture. There is an impressive documentation of Africa?s contribution to world civilization. It is a widely shared aspiration of African peoples to make even greater contributions to the ever increasing common heritage of Man?(8).

The author also, in quite typical anthropological vein, envisages the contemporary African experience, especially vis-?-vis Africa?s violent encounter with the culturally cannibalistic and imperialist West, as a template for understanding evolutionary trends in ideological and cultural paradigm shifts: ?Studies of the traditional are exciting, and of historical interest; but we must not stop there, if we are to deal with the complex problems of cultural adjustments that African peoples have to make in the contemporary situation, or that the rest of the world must make to contemporary Africa. The traditional cultures of Africa are of value in providing a historical base for understanding the more recent events and ongoing trends of the present day?(8).

Even so, Busia is also quick to point to the urgent need for the ?study of Africa ? or African Studies ? to be elevated from the relatively primitive status of anthropology into a sociology, or a relatively more relevant and modernized sub-discipline. To this end, the first Ghanaian to be named to the august status of ?professor? at Ghana?s flagship academy, the University of Ghana, observes: ?In ?Civilization on Trial? Toynbee predicted that future historians would say that ?the great event of the 20th Century was the impact of Western civilization upon all other living societies of the world of that day. They will say [that] this impact was so powerful and so pervasive that it turned the lives of all its victims upside down and inside out affecting the behavior, outlook, feelings and beliefs of individual men, women and children in an intimate way, touching chords in human souls that are not touched by more external forces, however ponderous and terrifying.? The impact of Western civilization on the peoples of Africa affords the most striking illustration of the effects described by Toynbee ? ?it has turned lives upside down and inside out,? and made Africa an urgent and challenging field for sociological studies. I think the Chair established in the University for the Afrika Studiecentrum is justifiably designated as the Chair for the Sociology and Culture of Africa, because it draws attention thereby to the urgent need to extend our study to Africa as it is today; Africa as it has been made by the shattering impact of European science and technology, European rule, commerce, and education, and the propagation of Christianity by European missionaries?(8-9).

Busia also highlights two socioeconomic trends that have dominated twentieth-century Africa, namely, the rapid movement towards political independence from colonial imperialism and a dramatic paradigm shift in the economic mode of development: ?The two most striking features of the recent history of Africa are the progress toward political independence from colonial status, and the process of transforming traditional and mainly subsistence economies to modern ones. Problems of economic development loom large in all discussions on Africa. Both [of] these features give education a key role, for the need for trained personnel for administrative and technical posts becomes obvious and urgent?(9).

And the great thinker and social scientist ought to have known this as well as any African scholar and/or social scientist, being that the future Prime Minister Busia was the first of two Gold Coasters in colonial Ghana to be appointed as district administrators by the British colonial overlords, the other being the future distinguished career diplomat, Mr. A. L. Adu.

Likewise, on the political front, Busia recognized two major ideological trends, namely, the trend towards democratic federalism or a decentralized system of democratic governance, on the one hand, and the one-party dictatorship, pioneered by Ghana?s President Nkrumah, that came to dominate the continental African political landscape throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s, broken in the various countries by adventurist military dictatorships. On the latter score, this is what the man who led Ghana?s first authentic democratic government had to say: ?Especially since World War II, the rapid acceleration of political and economic development in Africa has had the dimensions of a social revolution. Measures of economic development have affected the densities, distribution, mobility and stratification of populations. Political changes have altered patterns of authority, allegiance, and social groupings. New nations and political forms have emerged. Some of the new states are developing one-party authoritarian forms, in which traditional rulers are being swept away or swamped in the stream of change; others, paying more attention to local history and tradition, seek both progress and stability in federal forms; and in others, traditional monarchies seek to guide and preside over the inevitable change. Thus states like Ghana and Guinea, or Nigeria, or Ethiopia, or Uganda provide students of political systems with new typological models. ? New ideologies and aspirations, too, are among the forces of change, bringing Africa into contemporary ideological conflicts. All these pose problems for the social sciences; for fact-finding, analysis, interpretation, understanding and comparison?(9-10).

In the highly informed opinion of Busia, even in the face of epic modernistic transformation, there is to be recognized a remarkable centripetal and countervailing force pulling the African towards ancient African civilization and cultural practices. In other words, postcolonial Western-oriented development is by no means a passive and lineal progression but a veritably curvilineal dialogue between time-tested traditional values and beliefs, and the largely material and behavior-altering forces sweeping the entire continent from abroad: ?I refer to these theories in particular because, along with the plans and activities designed for change, there are also examples of a conscious return to a past golden age, in search of Africa?s own social heritage, and for norms rooted in a great past, whose revival, it is hoped, will again ensure grandeur and stability. ? The choice of the names of Ghana and Mali for the two new states in Africa, and the philosophical concept of ?negritude? of African intellectuals may be given as examples of traditionalism. Ghana goes back to an African empire which flourished in Western Sudan between 1000 and 1500 AD. It was displaced as the dominant state of West Africa by Mali which reached the height of its power and grandeur in the 14th Century, under King Kankan Musa whose authority spread from the coast of Senegal to the region of Niamey. Mali reached a degree of civilization which astounded Arab travelers, and won the esteem of the Mediterranean countries of the Middle Ages, because of its fabulous wealth. The choice of these names tells us that even where the wind of change is a hurricane, brakes may be provided by the pull of the past. ? Hence the conscious search for thickets of the past, hitherto ignored? (10-11).

For Busia, development is organically composed of material, psychical and spiritual components and ought to be envisaged as such, at least in the context of African sociology and culture: ?The philosophy of negritude of African intellectuals, whether we agree with it or dispute its validity, should bring it home to us that the peoples of Africa are seeking not only material culture, but also non-material values rooted in their own past, which will contribute to stability and sound progress, and national pride. ? The study of the Culture and Sociology of Africa must inescapably concern itself with values, not only because the right ordering of the moral and social life is the ultimate goal of human endeavor, but also because Africa is concerned with the behavior of different groups towards one another. The relationships and tensions between ethnic and racial groups is a matter of particular importance in East, Central and South Africa. ? Because of the considerable degree of cultural variability among the peoples of Africa, the student of African society cannot avoid asking to what extent the values of these various cultures are similar, and to what extent they are dissimilar. This, it is clear, poses a fundamental question for international relations? (11-12).

On the meaning and objective parameters of what constitutes ?African Sociology,? this is what Busia has to say: ?It is my hope, therefore, that in the study of the Sociology and Culture of Africa, we shall be sharing in the quest of the peoples of Africa to conquer poverty, disease and ignorance; in their struggle for stability and harmony in ever-widening groups, increasing in their range, complexity and heterogeneity; in their striving towards creativeness in art and science; in their yearning for acceptance as equals in the worldwide Brotherhood of Man?(12-13).

In this 16-page address on the Sociology of African History and Culture, the great African thinker and theorist calls for the practice of a social science that is humanistic and pragmatic in thrust: ?I have spoken of methodology and theories and systems in the Social Sciences. These are abstractions. They are conceptual tools, and not the reality. Sometimes, in the preoccupation with theories and systems, the reality is abstracted out of recognition; even out of existence. But the social sciences are human sciences. In the search for laws and systems, for concepts and objectivity, we do well to remember constantly that our studies concern human beings; that they deal primarily with men and women, with their happiness and suffering; with harmony and discord in social relations; with peace and war. Should the Social Sciences become only a matter of the head, obsessed only with the search for abstract theories and intellectually satisfying systems, without the human heart that shares human love and suffering, they will fail to serve mankind?(12).

Busia also pays glowing tribute to the first Ghanaian (and African) to be academically associated with the University of Leiden, Jacobus Eliza Johannes Capitein, 223 years before the former?s professorial appointment in 1960. Busia is also, as was to be circumstantially expected, full of effusive and even fulsome praises for his European hosts: ?The University of Leiden is one of the most illustrious seats of learning in Europe. On the 22nd [of] June 1737, Jacobus Eliza Johannes Capitein, an African from my country, came to study here at Leiden. I feel it a great honour, not only to myself, but to my country also, that I should be appointed a professor here over two hundred years after the first of my countrymen to study here was enrolled as a student at Leiden. It is humbling to think of the challenge and opportunity for research and scholarship which [this] office presents. ? We in Africa owe a great debt to this University and other seats of learning in Europe. I regard my appointment here as an opportunity to show in a small way something of the deep gratitude we feel to[wards] this and other great universities of Europe that have made it possible for us to become heirs with you of the wisdom of the ages?(13).

ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL: The Distorted Truth Of Glitch

The Distorted Truth In Glitch
Random, Chaotic, Unexpected?and Unpredictable - ?Not Just '?adical'

Glitch is honest. It's raw. It's the visual shorthand for the digital underground. Menacing, uncomfortable and oddly macho-geek, It's also beautifully?inconsistent and a perfect foil for streamlined digital media?culture. Fashion re-appropriates, design manipulates and art creates. This is all part of the constant remixing of culture, perfect for the feedback loop of glitch.?Is glitch the last true art form or is it just a ghost in the machine? Perhaps our future depends on the kind of thinking being applied to the recycling of digital material and perhaps those working with the idea of?disruption will balance an increasingly owned?digital landscape. It's happening in reality...

'Forms of graphic 'distortion' are now common to the internet, perhaps complementary to the almost bathroom-like sterility of web standards, or to demonstrate the infinite shaping and reshaping of memes and visuals as part of an evolutionary process authored by everyone and no one.'?Metahaven

The Dirty New Media

?There are those who would say that glitch art is a form of resistance, not just a representation,? ?explains?Jon Cates, New Media professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.?Chicago is a centre of glitch momentum in the US, if not the world and Cates is at the vanguard of it's discovery. ?Jason Scott, historian and archivist for Archive.org, has called our Chicago-based community the 'birthplace of dirty new media' and Rosa Menkman has written that we foreground glitch art in a way which has become a 'pivotal axis' of the international glitch scene? explains Cates. One way on engaging a global audience has been the recent birth of Uglitch an upload site based on the YouTube model. Site founder Benjamin Gaulon aka Recyclism explains the site's reference to YouTube and its users by saying? ?We are building a database of glitch GIFs that can then be used for new work by us and others, we are starting to see similar types of uploads [to YouTube] with? short edited film clips and the like to create glitches?.

'Having networks that facilitate the sharing and creation of images (Tumblr, dump.fm, and Google+) allow communities to form and build memetic value in a hyper-connected fashion. Information splicing with information.'?Travis Stearns?

The GIF file format has been around since the birth of the internet and is a natural means for carrying visual glitches. Designer Travis Stearns explains the attraction: ?their aesthetic is something digital natives are quite familiar with, but as an accessible art and communication medium they haven't been given much attention until this current point where democratisation of the tools for creating animations are universal and available to everyone. Having networks that facilitate the sharing and creation of images (Tumblr, dump.fm, and Google+) allow communities to form and build memetic value in a hyper-connected fashion. Information splicing with information.?

Style V Substance
'Many artists do see glitch as a tool for critiquing popular culture, but many see it simply as a nostalgic--8bit generation--aesthetic, others as digital psychedelia, others as a lens through which to?dissect language + linguistics, and others yet, as a purely structuralist/materialist practice.'?Nick Briz

?Over the past couple of years the visual glitch has become commodified. It's now just another filter in the designer's arsenal, at least as far as the gliche (glitch cliche) is concerned.? notes Ant Scott one of the first glitch VJ's now staunch artist under the name Beflix. The Glitch community is as fractured and distorted as the work it produces. GLI.TC/H the annual global new media festival that brings everything together. Nick Briz co-founder and co-organiser of the festival explains the diversity of the scene and the balance between commercial and 'punk ethos as?[It's] evident from all the debates that glitch.errz partake in glitch art for very different reasons. We had plenty of 'punks' present but we also had designers who work at ad agencies.?

So what of?the commercialisation of the genre? According to Briz this can be split up into two different concepts. One is the?commodification of genre, the other is it's?commercialisation.?

"Many glitch artists?believe?that glitch art can not become a genre, it defies codification in it's form" explains Briz, "That to combine the two words (glitch + art) and to imply that it's a genre or category is to undermine glitch's potential. They?believe?glitch is at it's best when it is random, chaotic,?unexpected?and unpredictable. While I appreciate this position and support the sentiment I do think it's a bit problematic and ultimately not true... of course glitch art is a genre, still it's important to address that such a debate is being had.?

'?I got pretty upset when Kanye West released his video "Welcome To Heartbreak" almost exactly three years ago. I thought it was the end of glitch art' Nick Briz

Next is it's commercialisation. I'm not a big fan of this word, it simplifies a complicated process with inescapably negative connotations. ?Rather, I think?popularisation?is a better term, it's a?slightly?more complex perspective. I got pretty upset when Kanye West released his video "Welcome To Heartbreak" almost exactly three years ago. I thought it was the end of glitch art. I had been making this kind of work for a few years, it was a complicated process and one I felt could only be executed with careful consideration of the material. I thought his video would be the end of such a process and the?beginning?of a commercialized?gimmick. And in some ways it was, datamoshing (the technique he "popularized" but by no means invented) got really "hot", and hundreds of shit videos got uploaded to youtube in its wake. At the same time it?transformed?a community of maybe a few dozen artists (that I knew of at least) into a few hundred artists."

It's not just Kayne West that's tipping the scale, more recently CK One wanted to shock and sniffed out glitch to add some?credibility?to their campaign...

Music and entertainment need not be pimped and perfumed. Andrew Benson teaches at the Design and Technology department at San Francisco Art Institute and works for a number of musicians including the masterfully awkward Aphex Twin.
??

Following a more mainstream alternative, a well travelled field of light artists working with musicians, Benson explains the glitch scene in San Francisco as ?The bay area has a really rich history of experimental non-narrative cinema. I ?hate to say it but I also think the popularity of dubstep has been really good for introducing kids to weird sounds, glitchy artefacts and getting them engaged.? ?Benson is at the top of his field, innovating live performance whilst handling engagement with a wider audience, manipulating and creating aesthetic.

The graphic design community manipulates the aesthetics of glitch, harking back to?halcyon days?Melvin Galapon is a UK-based designer who works on both commercial and artistic projects using glitch and dot matrix as an aesthetic basis for his work. He suggests ?there is a kind of movement where using glitches and dot matrix is retro-cool as the generation of people currently creating work come from an era where this was part and parcel of the technology we all part of"

We're comfortable looking at screens and connecting to networks that show nothing but beauty and an obsession with perfectionism. To this end, distortion is closer to the reality of our fractured,?temporal information society.' Travis Stearns

Explaining the relationship that designers have with glitch Travis Stearns explains "I relate distortion in the current context of the internet to punk communication art, particularly xerox flyers and zines. HD screens are hanging everywhere now. The new objects of desire, our smart phones and iPads, favor minimalism and vast white space. We're comfortable looking at screens and connecting to networks that show nothing but beauty and an obsession with perfectionism. To this end, distortion is closer to the reality of our fractured, temporal information society."

The Accidental Anarchists

Jennifer Daniel, designer for BBW explains ?I guess what I'm attracted to is how these visual interruptions create spatial correlations that have always existed but no one else saw. Being able to find something that no one else has articulated is what so many creative consciously try to do. And it turns out you don't even need to have a conscious to do it.?

Transparency

Speaking of the relevance to glitch and branding, Fontaine suggests ?glitch and disturbance makes a work or experience seem imperfect and?therefore more real. It's important that we mix the real and the virtual, blurring the boundaries - it's what people are used to now in these new hybrid realities we immerse ourselves in everyday.?

Transparency also has a political connotation and the self appointed bastion for this is the notorious Wikileaks organisation. Dutch design company Metahaven took on the job of fund raising for the organisation and produced a number of products including a scarf, complete with distorted Louis Vuitton graphics as well as mugs and T-Shirts. The work was recently featured in an exhibition at the Museum of The Image (formerly The Graphic Design Museum) in Breda, Netherlands.

Metahaven explain the link between graphic distortion and the Internet are linked by saying ?forms of graphic 'distortion' are now common to the Internet, perhaps complementary to the almost bathroom-like sterility of web standards. or to simply demonstrate the infinite shaping and reshaping of memes and visuals as part of an evolutionary process authored by everyone and no one.?
'...A whole new approach that combines today?s possibilities in technology, (neo)craft, social media and advertising to create a new world image' Dennis Elbers.

Dennis Elbers, curator at the Museum Of The Image explains the relevance of this ?Designers have the ability to make this world transparent. This is what we need opposed to hierarchy. And I'm not just talking about 'green annual reports' but a whole new approach that combines today?s possibilities in technology, (neo)craft, social media and advertising to create a new world image."

As for far reaching impact of glitch beyond graphics, Benjamin Gaulon aka Recyclism, has this to say: ?current technological design strategies, based on the notion of disposable devices and planned obsolescence, need to be challenged in order to find more sustainable models. By exploring other routes such as hardware hacking and recycling strategies of obsolete technology I believe we can to develop new sustainable models.??

Glitch is not disposable, it is the error of our digital ways if we think it is.?

Writing And Speaking ? Changing Speeches Into Ebooks, Articles ...

Another day, I used to be talking into a gal who is an absolute specialist in audio programming online. She has worked with a few of the top motivational speakers within the nation, and aided them convert their previous audio and video tapes into electronic press. That acquired me to take into consideration how I might choose a number of my speeches, seminars, and talks and convert all of it into ebooks, content articles, and manuals. More than the previous 5 years, I?ve converted many of my manuals into content articles and ebooks.

And I?ve taken a lot of my expertise which I have formerly made use of to give speeches to a variety of groups and at schools and turned that knowledge and experience into on line articles. Indeed, I am not the only 1 that has completed this, it seems that lots of people are undertaking it and it functions. But obviously, there?s a proper way and a wrong strategy to do it, and it?s usually tough to acquire speeches on old VHS videotapes, which were completed ten many years ago or lengthier and convert them into DVDs, and digital ebooks.

What most people don?t recognize is whenever you communicate it really is distinctive than whenever you current a thing within a writing format. Also when you?re giving a speech and utilizing a great deal of hand and body gestures, you have a tendency to pick out unique words than you?d if you?re wanting to be descriptive even though you are creating. Also, not absolutely everyone has PowerPoint presentations which go back again and correspond to all their speeches for the final 10-years. In case you do and you want to change individuals speeches into ebooks it is a lot less difficult because you might have all these items within the PowerPoint presentation for titles and subtitles of one?s e-book.

Could it be probable to convert ebooks, posts, and manuals into speeches another way around? Of course, I do believe it?s, however it is not as easy as you may feel. Not every person can study a teleprompter or script as good as President Barack Obama, and that?s a talent, and it will take lots of apply. In case you are transforming your ebooks and posts into movies for let us say YouTube or DVDs you might have to become cautious to appear into the digital camera, and do it though you are studying, and that is not quick, not to mention the reality that your pupils are heading again and forth the complete time.

Of course, these are all factors you?ll want to look at when changing your specialist knowledge from one particular format to a further to reach the most amount of people today feasible. Indeed I hope you may please take into consideration all of this and feel on it. You?ve got any feedback, concerns, and/or concerns on tips on how to get this done, make sure you shoot me an e-mail.
