Spiders in Borneo: Entangled and pierced

You?re walking through a Borneo rainforest, keeping your eyes focused on shrubs and tree trunks that might be good opportunities for spider hunting, and suddenly your forward progress is halted. Three possible explanations: (1) You?re in one of those nightmares where you keep trying to get somewhere but mysteriously can?t move. (2) You?ve become entangled in vines across your path. (3) A rattan palm has you in its spiny clutches. No nightmares yet for me on this expedition, but the other two occur several times each day.

Vines (or ?lianas?) crisscross a tropical forest like a tangled spider web, at all heights from the ground to the forest canopy. Indeed, there are so many lianas among the trees, some as thick as a small tree?s trunk, that when one tree falls from a storm or decay, it may pull down surrounding trees by their connecting lianas. For me, raised in the temperate zone, the idea of so many vines is unexpected. I expect plants to grow vertically, not diagonally or horizontally. I don?t pay enough attention for lianas as I walk, and often I am suddenly held as in this photo of my entangled leg. I rarely trip, but I am sometimes befuddled as to how to untie the knot I am in.

Vines are stubborn foes, but not nearly so cruel as the terror of the Bornean jungle, rattan palms. The central rib of each multi-part leaf extends beyond the leaf as a long filament reaching into space. These filaments can cross a meter or more, linking to another plant like a liana?s tendrils. It would be just another vine entangling me ? except that along the filament?s length are many small backward-pointing spines. It?s as if the forest were criss-crossed by meters-long hacksaw blades. When one catches my clothes, I feel a sharp tug and I?m stuck.

Sometimes, I can twirl around and I?ll get unstuck, but other times I have to try to grab the spiny tendril (gingerly) and pull it away. Of course, sometimes it?s not my clothes but my skin that the spines dig into as I charge through the forest. Luckily, most of the blood lost has been from my hands, not my neck. I?d mentioned in a previous post that Edy voted the leeches as her biggest annoyance; for me, it?s the rattan palms.

Why do rattan palms have these tendrils that inflict suffering, apparently gratuitously, meters from the plant?s body? They don?t seem to make sense as protective devices against animals. Instead, the spines serve to keep hold on other plants that the palm uses for support. But, why might the palm want to borrow support from other plants?

Look at a forest, and a question might occur to you: why do the trees invest so much into those tall trunks that don?t photosynthesize and don?t pull in water and minerals? If only the trees could all agree to be short, they could divert the resources that make the trunk instead into flowers and fruit. But, of course, they don?t cooperate, but rather compete, and their competition for precious light compels them to build massive trunks to lift against gravity and outreach their neighbors.

Lianas that rise up through the forest along the trunks of trees are, in one sense, parasites. They avoid investing in a trunk, but can still reach high into the light by using the infrastructure built by the trees. I like to think of them as ?gravity parasites?. (Actually, this name isn?t quite right, as they are parasites of the effort against gravity, but ?gravity parasites? is more poetic.) Rattan palms play the same game, maintaining with their spines their hold on upward-growing plants. Plants play cruel games with each other and with animals. And you thought plants were so innocent.

So what are weight loss foods? We have all heard the expression, ?you are what you eat?. Whether it?s pork chops, fried chicken, potatoes, cheese cake or chocolate, your body will respond based on how you are feeding it. Carrots are great weight loss foods due to its low calorie but high nutritional content (such as vitamins A, C, beta carotene and fiber). Because of its abundant fiber, it fills you up easily, preventing you from heaping on excess calories.Carrots are even more nutritious when cooked, but not over cooked. When consuming raw carrots the cellular walls are tough and harder on your digestive system. Steaming vegetables will maintain the nutrition, but aid in digestion. This enables your body to convert more beta carotene into vitamin A. Alternatively, you can blend carrots into juices with other fruits or vegetables.

You have to distinguish what can be considered ?super? foods which are a must for a healthy weight loss diet. For some dieters, adding these weight loss foods to their daily diet can provide quick weight loss that they need. They prefer this because they feel so restricted on other formal diet plans being offered in the market.

As experts suggest we need to drink at least two to three liters of water each day. But this can be hard to maintain on a consistent basis if you are not used to drinking that much water. An alternative to add food items with a high water content, but fewer calories. These types of foods help to fulfill our water intake and with fewer calories being eaten, our bodies begin to lose those extra pounds while the water helps to flush out toxins which speeds up the weight loss process even faster.

Specific foods aimed specifically at rapid weight loss are ones that speed up your metabolism. These are the kinds of foods that are rich in protein such as chicken, fish, meat and eggs. Caffeine and other weight loss accelerators can speed up your body to make you lose weight. HOWEVER, these adding fat burning pills and accelerators can cause problems and be damaging to your health.. Foods like citrus fruits, soybeans, fresh fruits, garlic, cayenne pepper and olive oil are much better alternatives than artificial accelerators.

Developers land low rates for construction loans - Finance ...

Competition among eager banks is ?downright fierce?

The demand for new commercial construction may still be weak ? except in the multifamily sector ? but seasoned developers are finding plenty of bank suitors ready to make loans right now.

?The competition is as high as we?ve seen in five years ? it?s gotten downright fierce out there,? says Terry Kriesel, senior vice president for commercial real estate lending at St. Paul-based Bremer Bank.

The interest rates charged by those lenders started dropping in mid-2011 and continued to fall in the first quarter of 2012.

Kriesel said the most aggressive banks have lowered spreads over indexes to just 2 percent, which would mean a total interest rate of 2.24 percent on a construction loan. (In general, banks price construction loans based on a spread above the one-month Libor rate, which was 0.24 percent on Wednesday.)

More conventional, current rates range from upper 2 percent to just more than 3 percent, but developers and lenders say rates on many loans have dropped below 3 percent.

Alex Young, a senior vice president for development at St. Paul-based MSP Commercial, said his company will start construction on a new $5 million Veterans Administration medical building in Maplewood next month with a construction loan priced at below 3 percent.

?We saw the prices coming in every month this year, and this project definitely is benefiting by that trend. This is much below the rates we were looking at last summer,? Young said.

Bremer Bank handled MSP?s loan.

Dominium, the Plymouth-based multifamily developer and investor, is also saving borrowing costs on several projects under way now, including the redevelopment of the historic Buzza Building in Minneapolis? Uptown neighborhood. That 96-year-old manufacturing building is being converted to affordable apartments using tax credit financing.

The developer obtained a bridge loan from U.S. Bank to pay construction costs, which priced at just over 3 percent, while waiting for the tax credit to take effect, said Shane LeFave, a senior development associate with Dominium. Dominium obtained a $15.4 million bridge loan for the $34.5 million project.

?We?ll do projects at that price all day long,? LeFave said. ?Historically, those are extraordinary rates.?

The lender competition driving rates down has grown largely because banks say they cannot find enough borrowers to put their deposits to work. Alternative investments in securities or Federal Reserve investment banks offer returns below 1 percent, so construction loans ? even at very narrow spreads ? are lucrative, Kriesel said. ?There aren?t enough good assets out there to feed all the banks,? he said.

But the competition is also being spurred by the growing number of banks that are lending to developers again, as the economy slowly improves and their balance sheets get stronger.

?There are more players engaged in that market now,? said Jeanne Crain, market president for M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group in the Twin Cities. Her bank is one of those newly engaged lenders.

?We weren?t actively trying to build our portfolio last year,? Crain said. ?We didn?t have the capital to do that, and we were focused on managing what we had. But we?re back and want to grow again.?

Crain said M&I is seeing banks move competition beyond pricing to the location and deal structure.

?Banks are willing to look at locations that they would have turned their back on a year ago,? she said, adding that they are also offering fixed-rate loans for up to 10 years beyond the construction loan.

?But banks aren?t going to get crazy again? on the terms, she said.

One sign of that post-recession prudence is the increased importance lenders are placing on debt service coverage now, Young said.

?Three or four years ago, banks didn?t emphasize those, which meant you could build projects with 20 to 30 percent pre-leasing,? Young said. ?Now we?ve got to have 70 percent, and that?s actually good for everybody.?

Clinical trial to test success of Cystic Fibrosis lung infection treatment

Experts from Bristol and Nottingham are leading a major new national study to investigate whether intravenous antibiotics are effective in killing a common germ that causes dangerous complications in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.

The team is hoping to find out if the treatment is more effective than traditional therapies in tackling Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes a chronic destructive lung infection in CF patients and which cannot be eradicated unless it is caught in the early stages.

Dr Simon Langton Hewer, from University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, who is chief investigator of the study, said: "It's very exciting to have a clinical trial available to CF patients around the whole of the UK. This is the first CF trial for many years to be run in the UK and will answer one of the important questions affecting CF patients."

Professor Alan Smyth in The University of Nottingham's School of Clinical Sciences, a co-investigator in the TORPEDO clinical trial, said: "Children and adults with CF are now receiving intravenous antibiotics for Pseudomonas more and more often, with no good evidence that this is more effective. We want to see if intravenous antibiotics do work better than traditional oral treatment because oral treatment is easier to give at home and does not require a hospital admission."

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium that lives in the environment, lurking in places such as sink drains. Most CF patients have chronic lung infection with the germ by their late teens. Oral and nebulised (inhaled) antibiotics have mainly been used to eradicate Pseudomonas, but are often only effective if the infection is caught in time.

Intravenous antibiotics are being used more often to treat the infection, however, there is no current clear scientific evidence that intravenous treatment is better than oral treatments. Intravenous treatment means that patients with CF need to spend up to two weeks in hospital in addition to the medication they may previously have been prescribed.

The new trial is funded with 1.5 million from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme and sponsored by University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. So far, 41 CF centres and clinics around the UK have signed up to the trial coordinated from the Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN) Clinical Trials Unit in Liverpool with the aim of recruiting 280 volunteer CF patients.

Adele Whitford from Severn Beach near Bristol, whose daughter has cystic fibrosis, said: "We decided to take part in the trial because we want to help improve the care for cystic fibrosis patients. As a nurse, part of my job is to provide best evidence practice and without research being carried out you haven't got that evidence."

Zo and Steve Elliott, of Mapperley Park, Nottingham, have two-year-old twins Alexander and Isobel who were both diagnosed with CF shortly after they were born. They say they didn't hesitate in getting the twins involved with the trial and hope the research will give parents of children with CF firm evidence of whether IV antibiotics really do offer the best treatment option.

Zo said: "When we were invited on to the trial I was initially really surprised that this research hadn't already been done because in our experience IV antibiotics are generally perceived among parents of children with CF to be the best way of eradicating the infection. As a mum, if it's a toss-up between being at home with a nebuliser for three months or having your child in hospital having invasive treatment for two weeks I know what my gut instinct tells me it's home every time. But it would be reassuring to have some firm evidence to allow us to make a more informed choice and that's why this research is long overdue."

Matthew Reed, Chief Executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust said: "Pseudomonas infection is a leading cause of lung damage in people with CF so it is important to find the most effective way to eradicate this bug and therefore help people with CF to live longer. We commend the team at Nottingham and Bristol for their initiative on this study and hope that suitable people with CF throughout the UK will agree to take part in this important piece of research. It is great to see so many UK CF centres (large and small) involved and we would encourage centres not yet taking part to sign up for the trial."

Patients with a new Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection which has been identified through a routine sample from the lungs are being invited on to the study and are given (at random) either two weeks of intravenous antibiotics and three months of nebulised antibiotics or three months of combined oral and nebulised treatment. They will then be followed up for a further 15 months through routine clinic visits to assess whether the germ has been eradicated and stays away for at least a year.

If the trial finds that intravenous antibiotics are more successful in treating the infection, this will form the basis of national guidelines on standard medical practice and mean that patients have access to a more effective treatment.

If intravenous treatment doesn't work as well as traditional methods, it could spare patients the inconvenience of hospitalisation, the trauma of having an intravenous cannula inserted a particular problem for many children suffering from CF and the upset of missing school or work for two weeks.

They say they didn't hesitate in getting the twins involved with the trial and hope the research will give parents of children with CF firm evidence of whether IV antibiotics really do offer the best treatment option.

Zo said: "When we were invited on to the trial I was initially really surprised that this research hadn't already been done because in our experience IV antibiotics are generally perceived among parents of children with CF to be the best way of eradicating the infection. As a mum, if it's a toss-up between being at home with a nebuliser for three months or having your child in hospital having invasive treatment for two weeks I know what my gut instinct tells me it's home every time. But it would be reassuring to have some firm evidence to allow us to make a more informed choice and that's why this research is long overdue."

Matthew Reed, Chief Executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust said: "Pseudomonas infection is a leading cause of lung damage in people with CF so it is important to find the most effective way to eradicate this bug and therefore help people with CF to live longer. We commend the team at Nottingham and Bristol for their initiative on this study and hope that suitable people with CF throughout the UK will agree to take part in this important piece of research. It is great to see so many UK CF centres (large and small) involved and we would encourage centres not yet taking part to sign up for the trial."

Patients with a new Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection which has been identified through a routine sample from the lungs are being invited on to the study and are given (at random) either two weeks of intravenous antibiotics and three months of nebulised antibiotics or three months of combined oral and nebulised treatment. They will then be followed up for a further 15 months through routine clinic visits to assess whether the germ has been eradicated and stays away for at least a year.

If the trial finds that intravenous antibiotics are more successful in treating the infection, this will form the basis of national guidelines on standard medical practice and mean that patients have access to a more effective treatment.

If intravenous treatment doesn't work as well as traditional methods, it could spare patients the inconvenience of hospitalisation, the trauma of having an intravenous cannula inserted a particular problem for many children suffering from CF and the upset of missing school or work for two weeks.

"It's one of those things that just makes you smile because it shouldn't exist, or rather, you don't expect it to exist," Alister Graham, a professor at Australia's Swinburne University of Technology, said this week in a news release. "It's a little like the precarious Leaning Tower of Pisa, or the discovery of some exotic new species which at first glance appears to defy the laws of nature."

And yet, there it is: LEDA 074886, a square-looking dwarf galaxy that's part of the NGC 1407 Group of more than 250 galaxies in the constellation Eridanus, 70 million light-years away. The "emerald-cut galaxy" was spotted in a wide-field image taken using Japan's Subaru Telescope, and discussed in a research paper to be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Most galaxies are either spheroidal, disk-shaped or irregular and lumpy, Graham noted. LEDA 074886 seems to have four rounded corners. Graham and his colleagues suspect that the galaxy is actually shaped like a shallow cylinder or an inflated disk, seen somewhat side-on. That would fit with observations from the Keck Telescope, which picked up the signs of a rapidly spinning, thin disk embedded in the galaxy's center.

"One possibility is that the galaxy may have formed out of the collision of two spiral galaxies," said Swinburne Professor Duncan Forbes, one of the study's co-authors. "While the pre-existing stars from the initial galaxies were strewn to large orbits, creating the emerald-cut shape, the gas sank to the midplane, where it condensed to form new stars and the disk that we have observed."

Studying the dynamics behind the square-looking shape could provide insights for modeling the development and interaction of other galaxies in collision, the researchers said.

"Curiously, if the orientation was just right, when our own disk-shaped galaxy collides with the disk-shaped Andromeda galaxy, about 3 billion years from now, we may find ourselves the inhabitants of a square-looking galaxy," Graham said. Maybe Huey Lewis was right: It's hip to be square.

"I've found that a very specific spherical geometry may be expressed at all scales, from subatomic to universal, including the untold number of circular sacred symbols that all cultures throughout time and location have used to express relationships between each other, Earth, Cosmos and Creator," he told me in an email.

Big earthquake hits Mexico, no major damage reported

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A major earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, unleashing panic as it damaged hundreds of buildings and caused homes in the capital to bounce like "trampolines".

Office workers fled into the street when the 7.4-magnitude quake shook Mexico City for more than a minute. Cell phone lines went down, building were evacuated, traffic snarled and the stock exchange had to suspend trading early.

The governor of the southwestern state of Guerrero, Angel Aguirre, said he had received reports of 500 homes damaged, with some of them knocked down, but he gave no more details.

The tremor was one of the strongest since the devastating 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1985, which killed thousands in Mexico City.

No deaths were reported on Tuesday and the quake caused no major disruptions to air travel or to oil installations, but it scared many residents.

Martha Suarez, an Argentine living in the capital's Roma neighborhood said she had never known anything like it.

"My TV set fell over, the building felt like it was on a trampoline. This one was like no other I have felt before," Suarez said, holding her little dog close.

Emergency services said 800 houses were damaged in Guerrero state, many of them in Ometepec, near the epicenter of the quake. Officials in Guerrero, which is home of popular Pacific beach resort Acapulco, could not say if buildings had collapsed.

In the neighboring state of Oaxaca, 68 mud-brick houses were damaged and five people were injured, one of them seriously, in the hardest hit area around the town of Pinotepa Nacional near the Pacific coast, local emergency services said.

Some buildings in the capital's trendy district of Condesa were cracked by the earthquake on Tuesday, and residents raced out of buildings with young children and dogs in their arms.

"I swear I never felt one so strong, I thought the building was going to collapse," said Sebastian Herrera, 42, a businessman from a Mexico City neighborhood hit hard in 1985.

Television images showed part of a bridge collapsed onto a vehicle on the outskirts of Mexico City, but Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said no one was injured and that helicopter flyovers showed there was no sign of major damage in the capital.

President Felipe Calderon also said there were no reports of serious damage.

More than two hours after the quake, some residents of the capital were still too scared to return to their homes, fearing powerful aftershocks.

Mexico City's international airport was operating normally and only a couple of flights to the United States were temporarily grounded, a spokesman said.

State oil company Pemex said all its installations on the Pacific coast were operating normally, including the country's largest 330,000-barrel-per-day capacity Salina Cruz refinery.

The U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS, said the quake registered magnitude 7.4 and there were several aftershocks.

In Acapulco, schools were evacuated and some parents rushed to pick up their children, but there appeared to be no major damage to hotels or other buildings in the resort.

The White House, which has declined to confirm reports that President Barack Obama's daughter Malia was vacationing in Mexico, said the 13-year-old was safe.

"In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said Kristina Schake, communications director to first lady Michelle Obama. "We would reiterate our request that the media respect the privacy and security of the Obama children and not report on or photograph the girls when they are not with their parents."

The quake was felt as far away as Guatemala City.

A spokesman for Mexico City's health authorities said hospitals and clinics were operating normally although some patients were evacuated from damaged buildings.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the inland earthquake would not generate a destructive widespread tsunami, but there was the possibility of some local tsunami effects.
