A piece of rock history is up for sale on eBay. Actually, a three-piece set of indie rock glory is more exact. The drum kit belonging to Guided By Voices drummer Kevin Fennell is up for auction with a starting bid of $55,000.
The steep price tag is somewhat ironic considering the band's affinity for lo-fi sound.
The deal includes two toms, a bass drum, several cymbals, and a foot pedal on which the band's Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, Under the Bushes Under the Stars, Mag Earwig, Let's go Eat the Factory, Class Clown Spots a UFO, English Little League, and Bears For Lunch were recorded. The drums were also used in three U.S. and three European tours, including the band's 2010 reunion trek. The eBay ad states that the kit was used on the Central Park Summer Stage and The Daily Show.
"On top of that... they are simply good-looking," the post boasts.

Indeed, the three drum pieces feature custom-made shells of Eames 12-ply birch. The deal includes "extra goodies" such as a German-issued clear vinyl copy of the "best of" compilation, "An Earful o' Wax," a 2010 Hallway of Shatterproof Glass Tour poster, a 2010 Philadelphia tour-stop poster from the Trocadero, and a 2011 World Domination Tour laminate.
The winning bidder will get the kit hand-delivered and set up by Fennell himself, with an option to jam. "It saves on shipping/handling charges, and I would enjoy meeting the person that is as enthusiastic about percussion/nostalgia as I am," he writes on a linked website. "It also gives me an excuse to travel for a worthy cause and 'shoot the shit' about drums, drumming, and anything else that comes up."
So far there have been no bids, with about six days left.
Fennell explains his reasoning for selling the kit, writing: “You need to understand that I do so with great reservation, as I have sentimental feelings attached to them," he writes. "Great memories of lugging them in and out of studios, bars, clubs, halls, and stadiums, and always feeling secure that they could take a beating and sound great while doing so. I guess I believe that there is someone out there who will appreciate them as much as, if not more than, I do. Someone who can appreciate their history, where they have been and what was recorded on them. My hope is that the RIGHT person will buy them and use them to the fullest."
