I don't normally think of the SBA as a source of useful information, but colleague Alan Goldberg passed along a recent SBA posting with some stats and tips small business owners should keep in mind.
The post highlights?a July 2012 study by accounting software company Sage, finding that the bulk of small businesses are backing up key data on-site only. Further, the study found that only 38 percent of surveyed small businesses had a?formal disaster preparedness plan.
Though the four tips included in the post are fairly short, there are links to excellent reference materials. In brief, the tips involve automating your backup and building in redundancy (preferably offsite), utilizing server virtualization, running an enterprise security suite and having a comprehensive disaster recovery preparedness plan.
If you think that last tip is old hat, consider this: Experts have said that after full-blown disasters like major hurricanes or floods, 40-60% of small businesses never reopen their doors. A lot of that has to do with planning or, rather, the lack thereof. I'm sure a lot of small business owners?felled by major disasters now wish that they had spent time planning for them.
