Biden tells Florida voters Romney is 'stuck in the past' on women's ...

By Julius Whigham II, Palm Beach Post -

PALM BEACH, Fla.?In a speech aimed at the middle class and female voters, Vice President Joe Biden laid out the importance of winning Florida on Friday afternoon.

Speaking before a packed gymnasium at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce, Biden made his pitch as recent polls show the presidential race in Florida being a virtual dead heat.

?If we win Florida, we win this election,? Biden told the crowd estimated at more than 1,000.

Biden, who spoke for about 30 minutes, made an appeal to female voters while accusing the Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, of being out of touch with the middle class.

Biden told those in attendance that one area where Romney ?could not be more stuck in the past is on the issue of women?s rights.?

?Barack Obama and I are absolutely committed to ensuring that our daughters and our granddaughters have the exact same opportunities as our sons and our grandsons,? Biden told a cheering audience. ?They made it clear that they don?t believe a woman has the right to control her own body. ? It?s clear they don?t believe in protecting a woman?s equal access to health care.?

Biden cited a moment in Tuesday?s presidential debate, referencing a comment made by Romney in response to a question about women?s pay in the workplace

?When Gov. Romney was asked a direct question in the last debate whether or not women deserved equal pay for equal work, what was his answer?? Biden asked, leaving the the crowd to fill in the response of ?binders full of women.?

Biden accused the Republican presidential ticket of flip-flops on positions such as taxes, education funding and health care, telling the crowd of supporters that Romney and running mate Paul Ryan have what Obama has called ?Romnesia.?

?It?s a bad disease, and it?s contagious,? Biden said.

The vice president also made the case that the Obama administration has made progress in dealing with a deficit left behind by the Bush administration.

?In eight years, they doubled our national debt,? Biden said. ?They left the president with a $1 trillion bill the day he sat down behind his desk in January 2009 and they brought about the Great Recession of 2008 that crushed the middle class.?

Hammering home the middle class theme, Biden reminded the crowd of the ?47 percent? remarks made by Romney during a fundraiser this year in Boca Raton.

?He actually said that 47 percent of the American people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lives. Where has he been?? Biden said. ?The American people are so much better, so much more decent, so much more responsible than these guys give them credit for. ? They?re dead wrong about Americans being dependent and they?re dead wrong about America being in decline.?

Before Biden?s speech, Democratic congressional candidate Patrick Murphy was among those warming up the audience. Murphy used the opportunity to also take a swipe at Romney?s 47 percent remark.

? Mitt Romney has made clear that the everyday American is not his concern,? Murphy told the crowd. ?He told his millionaire donors that he doesn?t care about 47 percent of Americans. We deserve a president and vice president who have our back.?
