We Did It: Just Keep Moving Fitness | Greatist

With the weather turning cooler, the Greatist Team headed indoors this past Friday for a kickboxing bootcamp at NYC?s Just Keep Moving Fitness. Everyone at Greatist is already a martial arts master, with skills in Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and Japanese Sword Fighting. We were mentally prepped for an hour or so of punching, kicking, and grappling ? hopefully all with minimal bodily harm.

After arriving at JKM?s basement studio, however, we soon realized the emphasis was definitely going to be on the bootcamp aspect of the class. Instructor Javar Lee had set up 30 ? yep, 30 ??different stations for a nonstop, rotating mega-circuitwith minimal rest and a whole lotta??action.

After a quick but thorough warm-up led by gym founder Tauris McBride, Javar took us right into the main event. Everyone in the class started at a different station and rotated after one minute, eventually hitting every muscle group ? and it seemed like just about every possible movement ? along the way. Ring pull-ups, burpees, squats, medicine ball presses, kicks, punches, and the new-to-us ?ground-and-pound? with a heavy fighting dummy were just a few of the stand outs during the ?seemingly never-ending course.

Finally, Javar called time. Drenched and exhausted, we collected ourselves and joined the class regulars in wiping the floors clean of sweat (and maybe a few tears). The circuit was difficult, sure, but it was also fun, and Javar?s selection of exercises ensured we never got bored. The only downside was that with so much going on, it was easy to get mixed up on movements and difficult for Javar to keep track of what everyone was up to at a given time. But we worked together to figure out the details and nail down exercise form.

Before we left, Tauris gave us the scoop on how JKM was founded. After losing 150 pounds over the course of a year, Tauris was inspired to start a gym where members could explore a wide range of classes and fitness methodologies; after all, mixing things up keeps fitness from getting boring. If Javar?s class is any indication, we don?t think that?ll be a problem for Just Keep Moving?s members anytime soon.
